English Language Classes: Top Goals as Stated by English Language Learners

I have been teaching English as a Second Language on Verbling for seven months now and have come across many English language learners with a variety of goals. I decided to write this article today to inform the English language learning community about the goals of other English language learners. By taking a look at the goals of others, people can set new goals and also remember that their goals are common goals and they are not alone on the journey of learning a new language.

Top Goals as Stated by English Language Learners:

1. Pass the IELTS General exam for Immigration

2. Improve spoken and written English for work

3. Pass the IELTS Academic exam for University Entrance

4. Pass the TOEFL exam

5. Improve English to achieve the English language level abilities of a Native Speaker

As we can see, the top goal continues to be improving English for the purpose of passing the IELTS exam. After, there is a strong need to improve spoken and written English for work. Whether people are doctors, I.T. technicians, nurses or business people, the ability to communicate strongly in English continues to be a desired goal for many. In the third place, we can see a need among people to pass the IELTS Academic exam. The IELTS Academic exam is widely accepted by a number of universities and colleges around the world. Universities usually require a band score of 7 while colleges usually require a band score of 6, although higher band scores are always welcomed. As we can see, passing English exams continue to be the top goals of English language learners. In the fourth place, we see an interest among students to do well on the TOEFL exam. The TOEFL exam is of the same structure as the IELTS exam with four parts: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. It is also widely accepted by universities and colleges around the world. In the final place, we see a desire among students to achieve the English language level abilities of Native speakers. Many people have already passed their exams and are living in an English speaking country. While students have achieved their primary goals, they still want to continue on their learning journey and become better at what they have already learned to do great.
